Sarangapani Club – Sloganeering

Elections were round the corner and all political parties were creating slogans to explain what they have to offer. Sloganeering is defined as the use of slogans by people such as politicians or advertising agencies. The objective of sloganeering is to say something which people can chant easily, and people keep repeating it and it forms the basis of the election campaign.

Kaushik, always first to jump of the bridge wagon, said we have many slogans in Bridge. Let us play a game where each one says one Bridge slogan and we keep going round till someone cannot recollect a slogan.

Padma – “Usually Cover and Honour with and Honour” – Please note emphasis on Usually.

Prabha – “Bid it if you like it” – used on minor suit transfers on NT opening.

Kingo – “When even number of cards outside, then tend to break unevenly. When there are odd number of cards outside, the tend to break evenly” – used for suit distributions.

Kaushik – “Play a picture card from the hand with lesser cards to avoid blockage.”

Padma – “8 Ever, 9 Never” used for finessing with 8 cards and playing for drop with 9 cards.

Prabha – “P before Q – Points before Quality” used for responses on Ogust enquiry on weak 2 opening.

Kingo – “Bid Boldly, Play Safely” – However, I Bid boldly and play Boldly.”

Kaushik – “Usually Second hand lowest, third hand Highest”. Emphasis on the word Usually.

It was at this time that the waiter came in and said that they must vacate the table immediately as an election meeting has been planned. “We were never informed earlier” argued Kingo. The waiter replied without any anger “You re not reading the notice board.

They had to abandon the sloganeering game abruptly with no winner or loser.

Tailpiece:

Goofy was listening to all the discussions and thought that he knew only one slogan about dogs – Barking dogs seldom bite. It is not applicable to him as he never bites.
