Sarangapani Club – Radical Change

“Change is an Opportunity and not a threat” said Padma to initiate the discussions of the day. She had just attended an online seminar on this topic and was quite impressed by what she learnt. Kingo in his usual loud voice stated that human beings all along have been making changes to improve their quality of life. Look at some of the recent ones – mobiles, internet and video based communication. They have changed the way we work.

Kaushik was quick to compare this to Bridge and said “Bridge has also undergone radical changes. In yesteryears, systems were based on jump to game force while the modern method is to go slow with good hands. This is a radical change in concept. Prabha was in a pensive mood and said “When we were young, we were forced to learn correct spellings and multiplication tables. With the advent of computerization and calculators, kids today don’t get this basic education. My niece once told me why I should learn when there is computer to do the work.”

“We were taught that suit quality is important in pre-empting. I once saw an international championship match where the dealer opened 2H with 9 top six card heart”, said Kaushik. Padma, a quality analyst gave it a conceptual twist – changes will always take place and one has to manage change. If you look at the industrial revolution there were so many new inventions – electricity, telephones, steam engines, aeroplanes et all – Humanity adjusted to all the changes. We keep saying our time is the most complex one but it has been a changing world ever since humans came on planet earth”

Prabha made a pertinent point. Changes are good if they help humanity but we can see that internet is good but it can be used for incorrect purposes. When we introduce changes, it has to be controlled and give people time to settle down. When we make changes in bidding system, we make changes in instalments and give time to partnerships to adjust to the change before new changes are introduced”

Kingo had a key observation. When new concepts come in, there will always be a set of people who oppose it and their views must be understood and their concerns addressed and not brushed away. When computers were introduced in late 70s, there was tremendous opposition to it but today it is accepted as part of life.

Tailpiece: Goofy remarked that there has been no change in a dog’s life. A quick answer was dogs are contended and always enjoy irrespective of no change in life style. Living in the present with contentment is important.
